Wellington Schools Building Upgrades

At the beginning of 2024, the Ministry of Education put 100 school-building projects on hold, much to the frustration of many schools in Wellington Central who were facing moldy, leaky classrooms & major disruptions to learning. We were able to connect with affected schools and advocate to the Minister of Education Erica Stanford for an urgent solution.

We stood in solidarity among the incredible Wellington Girls College Students who staged a powerful protest on Parliament Lawn. The students transformed the grounds into a makeshift classroom, complete with desks, laptops and whiteboards. This demonstration was in response to revelations that one of their buildings, known as Brook Block, was earthquake-prone—a fact the Ministry of Education had known since 2020 but had only disclosed to the school in April 2024. Through the tireless advocacy of the Schools Principal Julia Davidson & the students themselves, WGC has now had funding approved for the building upgrades they require.
