Dixon Street Flats - Social Housing closure
The Dixon Street Flats, a central Wellington social housing block of 117 units, was deemed no longer fit for purpose in late 2022. This meant relocating tenants to alternative accommodation, but by early 2024, tenants that remained we're being served 90-day eviction notices. Many of the remaining 25 tenants, including elderly and disabled individuals, reported receiving unsuitable or no alternative housing options, leading to concerns about potential homelessness. Our office was able to work one-on-one with tenants to secure alternative housing that suited their needs & helped them avoid the Tenancy Tribunal. All tenants have now vacated the Dixon Street Flats, which remain empty & with no plan to be remediated or rebuilt, meaning another loss to our already stretched social housing stock.
