Kainga Ora Arlington Housing Development
The Arlington development in Wellington, spearheaded by Kāinga Ora, was envisioned as a transformative public housing project aimed at addressing the city's housing shortage, however, as of June 2025, the project remains stalled. The original development planned to have approximately 300 new public homes across 16 buildings, ranging from townhouses to six-storey timber apartment & included plans for a playground, community gardens, and orchards.
Despite $48 million already spent on preparatory work—including design, demolition, decontamination, and foundational construction—the site has remained undeveloped for almost 5 years, while homelessness continues to skyrocket in our city. Our city is in desperate need of public housing, NOW, and we are sick of waiting and hearing excuses.
What action can we take?
I have penned an open letter to Housing Minister Chris Bishop, urging him to commit to the original design and tenure plans for the Arlington Kāinga Ora development. The letter emphasises the critical housing shortage in Wellington and calls for immediate action to resume the project - you can sign it HERE
